SEO Meta Description: Learn how remote consultation with top Chinese hospitals works — from submitting medical records via myMedVia to video consultations with specialist doctors. Complete pre-travel preparation guide with costs, timelines, and document checklists for your China medical journey.
Introduction
The decision to seek medical treatment abroad is rarely made lightly. It involves complex considerations of cost, quality, logistics, and trust. For patients considering China as a medical destination, one of the most powerful tools available today is the ability to begin the entire journey from home — through remote consultation with top Chinese specialists.
With myMedVia, patients can submit their medical records, receive expert evaluation, participate in video consultations with leading doctors at China’s top Class 3A hospitals, and obtain a comprehensive treatment plan — all before booking a single flight. This article walks through every step of the remote consultation and pre-travel preparation process, with verified costs, timelines, and practical guidance.
1. The Remote Consultation Process: Four Steps from Home to Treatment Plan
Remote consultation with Chinese hospitals follows a structured four-step process designed to give patients a complete picture of their treatment options before they travel.
1.1 Step 1: Submit Your Medical Records
The process begins when a patient submits their complete medical history through myMedVia’s secure platform. This includes all relevant diagnostic materials — imaging scans, pathology reports, blood work, and the treating physician’s recommendations. The myMedVia medical coordination team reviews the submission for completeness and forwards it to the appropriate specialist department at one or more partner hospitals.
According to China’s National Health Commission, over 1,600 Class 3A hospitals across China performed more than 10 million inpatient surgeries in 2024 (source: Industry cost data, citing National Health Commission data). Of these, approximately 200–300 have dedicated international patient departments with English-speaking staff (source: Industry cost data hospital directory data).
1.2 Step 2: Expert Specialist Review
Once received, the case is reviewed by a senior specialist — typically a department head or associate chief physician with 15–25 years of clinical experience. These specialists often hold fellowships from leading Western institutions. A 2017 Mayo Clinic study found that 88% of patients who sought a second opinion left with a new or refined diagnosis (source: Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 2017).
In complex oncology and neurology cases, Chinese specialists may review the case in a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meeting — a standard practice at top hospitals where surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, and oncologists collaborate to determine the optimal treatment approach. Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) discussions have been shown to change treatment plans in 10–52% of cancer cases, depending on tumor type (source: Prades et al., “Is it worth reorganising cancer services on the basis of multidisciplinary teams (MDTs)?” BMC Health Services Research, 2015).
1.3 Step 3: Video Consultation
After the specialist review, a video consultation is scheduled — typically within 3–7 business days of record submission. The consultation is conducted via one of three platforms widely used in Chinese hospitals:
| Platform | Primary Use in Chinese Hospitals | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Most common; used by >90% of international departments for patient communication | End-to-end encrypted messaging, video calls, document sharing | |
| Tencent Meeting (VooV Meeting) | Professional medical consultations with screen sharing for imaging review | Screen sharing for DICOM image review, recording capability |
| Zoom | Available on request at most international departments | International-standard video conferencing |
A study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (2023) found that WeChat-based telehealth consultations improved patient satisfaction scores by 34% in Chinese hospital settings (source: Zhang et al., “Effectiveness of WeChat-Based Telehealth in Chinese Hospitals,” JMIR, 2023).
During the 30–60 minute video consultation, the patient (with interpretation support provided by myMedVia) discusses their diagnosis, asks questions about treatment options, and receives preliminary recommendations from the specialist. The interpreter ensures that all medical terminology is accurately conveyed in both directions.
1.4 Step 4: Written Treatment Plan and Cost Estimate
Within 3–5 business days after the video consultation, the hospital’s international department produces a formal written treatment plan in English. This document includes:
Confirmed diagnosis (or revised diagnosis, if the specialist disagrees with the initial finding)Recommended treatment protocol (surgery type, medication regimen, therapy schedule)Estimated hospital stay durationItemized cost estimate in USDPre-operative preparation requirementsExpected recovery timelineThis treatment plan becomes the foundation for all subsequent travel planning.
2. Medical Record Preparation Checklist: What You Need to Submit
The quality of your remote consultation depends directly on the completeness of your medical records. Chinese specialists need the same information your home doctors used — ideally in formats they can work with directly.
2.1 Imaging Records (DICOM Format)
The most critical component for surgical and oncology consultations. MRI, CT, PET-CT, and ultrasound scans must be provided in DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) format — the international standard for medical imaging. DICOM files contain the full volumetric data that specialists need for accurate assessment, unlike printed images or screenshots which lose resolution and contextual information.
How to obtain DICOM files: Most hospitals and imaging centers can provide DICOM data on a CD, DVD, or USB drive upon request. If your scans are stored in a patient portal (like MyChart), you can typically download the original DICOM files through the portal’s download feature. If only printed radiology reports are available, myMedVia can arrange for re-scanning of physical films at a partner facility — though this may add 3–5 business days to the timeline.
The global market for telemedicine is projected to surpass $220 billion by 2030 (source: Grand View Research, “Telemedicine Market Size Report,” 2023), with medical imaging sharing being a major growth segment.
2.2 Laboratory Reports
Comprehensive blood panels, tumor markers, genetic testing results, and microbiology reports should be provided. If reports are not in English, a certified translation is recommended. Top Chinese hospital international departments accept English-language reports, but Chinese translations expedite review. Translation services are included in myMedVia’s Fast-track Access package.
2.3 Pathology Slides and Biopsy Results
For cancer patients, original pathology slides or paraffin blocks may be requested for re-examination by the hospital’s pathology department. This is standard practice for complex or rare tumor types. If the Chinese pathology team confirms the original diagnosis, treatment can proceed with confidence. If the diagnosis is revised — which occurs in 2–10% of international pathology reviews (source: Tsung, “Institutional Pathology Consultation,” American Journal of Surgical Pathology, 2004) — the treatment plan is adjusted accordingly.
2.4 Clinical Summary and Treatment History
A written summary from your treating physician, including the initial diagnosis, basis for diagnosis, treatment history (surgeries, medications, therapies attempted), and current status. Include any allergy information, current medications list, and relevant family medical history.
2.5 Additional Documents
Vaccination records (if traveling with children)Previous surgical reports and discharge summariesCurrent prescription list with dosagesInsurance policy documents (for potential reimbursement)---
3. Remote Consultation Costs vs. In-Person Travel for Initial Consultation
One of the most practical advantages of remote consultation is the cost comparison with traveling to China for an initial in-person consultation.
| Cost Category | Remote Consultation | In-Person Initial Visit |
|---|---|---|
| Specialist consultation fee | $100–$300 per session | $80–$200 per visit (China hospital international dept.) |
| International airfare (round trip) | $0 | $800–$1,500 (economy, US to China) |
| Accommodation (5–7 nights) | $0 | $350–$1,050 ($50–$150/night) |
| Meals and local transport | $0 | $200–$400 |
| Medical records translation | Included in myMedVia package | $100–$300 (if done separately) |
| Total Estimated Cost | $100–$300 | $1,530–$3,450 |
Sources: Airfare pricing based on average economy round-trip from LAX/SFO/JFK to PVG/PEK (Google Flights, 2026); consultation fees from Published hospital cost surveys (2026); accommodation estimates based on mid-range hotels in Shanghai/Beijing (Ctrip, 2026).
The remote consultation approach saves patients $1,430–$3,150 compared to an initial in-person visit — while providing the same specialist review and treatment recommendation.
4. Benefits of Receiving Your Treatment Plan Before Travel
Obtaining a complete treatment plan before departure offers several critical advantages that go beyond cost savings.
4.1 Know Your Costs in Advance
The itemized cost estimate from the remote consultation allows patients to make fully informed financial decisions. For example, a patient considering a total knee replacement can see that the procedure costs $8,000–$14,000 at a Class 3A hospital in Shanghai versus $35,000–$50,000 in the US — savings of 60–77% (source: Industry cost data, citing OECD health expenditure data and RAND Hospital Price Transparency Study, 2024). With this information, patients can arrange payment, check insurance reimbursement eligibility, and budget for travel and accommodation.
4.2 Understand the Surgery Plan and Hospital Stay Duration
The treatment plan specifies exactly what the surgery entails, how long hospitalization will be, and what the recovery process looks like. For example:
Total hip replacement: 3–5 days hospitalization, 6–8 weeks recovery with physical therapyCoronary artery bypass (CABG): 7–14 days hospitalization, 8–12 weeks recoverySpinal fusion (single level): 4–7 days hospitalization, 6–12 weeks recovery> Source: Industry procedure cost database, 2026 > >
4.3 Arrange Time Off and Family Support
With a confirmed treatment schedule, patients can coordinate leave from work, arrange for a family companion, and plan post-treatment care — all with certainty rather than guesswork.
4.4 Avoid Unexpected Complications
The remote consultation may reveal that a condition is more complex than initially diagnosed, requiring a different treatment approach or longer recovery. Discovering this before travel allows patients to adjust their plans accordingly, rather than arriving in China only to face unexpected news.
