Gastroscopy and colonoscopy are among the most common digestive diagnostic procedures. In the US, an uninsured person might spend nearly a month’s salary on a single gastroscopy. In the UK, private healthcare is much faster than the NHS, but the prices are similarly steep.
This article provides the latest verifiable 2026 endoscopy cost comparison data covering the UK, Canada, the US, and China, helping you make decisions based on real information.

6. Is It Still Worth It After Adding Travel Costs?
Scenario: UK patient needing combined gastroscopy + colonoscopy
| Cost Item | UK Private ($) | China ($) |
|---|---|---|
| Procedure cost | ~$2,100 | ~$1,400 |
| Round-trip flights (London-Beijing) | — | ~$1,200 |
| Local accommodation (2 nights) | — | ~$300 |
| mymedvia Fast-track | — | ~$300 |
| Total | ~$2,100 | ~$3,200 |
Honestly: flying to China solely for a routine endoscopy may not be cost-effective.
But combine it with this scenario, and the value changes dramatically:
Scenario: Canadian patient, 8 months waiting for colonoscopy, experiencing rectal bleeding, very anxious
| Option | Cost | Wait Time | Psychological Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep waiting in Canada | $0 (public healthcare) | Another 2-4 months | Constant anxiety, daily worry about cancer |
| Go to China immediately | ~$3,000-$4,000 | Days | Answers within days, rule out malignancy |
In this case, spending a few thousand dollars for months of peace of mind and priceless time — it’s worth it.
7. Why Are China’s Endoscopy Costs So Low?
1. Lower Operational Costs
Chinese hospitals have significantly lower operational costs (labor, facilities, administration) than Western counterparts. Even top-tier international hospitals charge far less than equivalent Western institutions.
2. Ample Competition
Beijing, Shanghai, and other Tier-1 cities have numerous private international hospitals (Raffles, Jiahui, United Family) and public hospital international departments (PUMCH IMS, Beijing Friendship International Center), creating competitive pressure that keeps prices reasonable.
3. High Efficiency
China’s top endoscopy centers perform hundreds of procedures daily. Beijing Friendship Hospital’s 100,000+ and Renji Hospital’s 260,000+ annual procedures represent efficiency levels Western hospitals struggle to match.
8. Important Notes on Costs
China prices reference international hospitals/departments in Beijing and Shanghai. Public hospital general outpatient costs are even lower (gastroscopy ~¥200-¥500), but typically lack English services and international patient protocols.Biopsies and polyp removal may incur additional charges, depending on findings during the procedure.Sedation/anesthesia: Usually included in Chinese international hospital quotes; may be separate in UK and US.International insurance: Some Chinese international hospitals accept direct billing (Bupa, Allianz, Cigna, etc.). Confirm when booking.mymedvia can help confirm a complete cost breakdown to avoid hidden charges.---
Conclusion
For patients needing endoscopy:
If you’re in the UK: Private gastroscopy £1,000-£2,500 (~$1,270-$3,170) vs China $400-$1,100, combined with months of NHS waiting — China offers a faster + cheaper alternativeIf you’re in the US: Even with insurance, out-of-pocket costs approach China’s full self-pay price. Uninsured patients save 60%-85% in ChinaIf you’re in Canada: The value of China endoscopy isn’t about saving money — it’s about skipping months of waiting and anxietyAre you struggling with endoscopy costs or waiting times?
