A Real Scenario: You’re Told to “Wait a Year”
Imagine this — or maybe you’re living it:
You visit your GP because of persistent knee pain. It takes 3 weeks to get an appointment. The GP says you need an MRI, so you join the MRI waiting list — 12 weeks.
After 12 weeks, the MRI shows severe cartilage wear — you need a total knee replacement. The GP refers you to an orthopedic specialist, and you wait another 8 weeks to see them.
The specialist confirms surgery is needed, then tells you: “Current NHS waiting time is about 42 weeks, but your case is assessed as non-urgent, so it might be over 52 weeks.”
Do the math: from first GP visit to surgery — over 18 months.
In the meantime, you endure constant pain, limited mobility, and a declining quality of life.
This is not fiction. This is the reality millions of orthopedic patients in the UK and Canada are living through in 2026.
1. NHS Orthopedic Waiting Times: What the Data Says
Overview (September 2025)
According to UK Parliament data, Trauma & Orthopaedics (T&O) is the largest waiting list of any NHS specialty:
| Metric | Data |
|---|---|
| Total patients on T&O waiting list | 860,865 |
| Patients waiting >18 weeks | 41.2% |
| Patients waiting >52 weeks (1 year) | 25,098 (July 2025 data) |

Scotland: Waiting 5+ Years
Scotland’s situation is worse than England’s. Scottish Labour’s FOI data for 2024-2025 reveals:
Tayside: One hip patient waited 2,049 days (5.6 years)Highlands: One patient waited 1,786 daysKnee replacement: Longest wait 1,868 days (>5 years)5 out of 14 health boards had median waits exceeding one year> Source: [Daily Record, “Scots waiting 5 years for operations”, 2026](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/scots-waiting-half-decade-knee-36533460) > >
Wales: Cross-Border Waiting Dilemmas
In Wales, patients face unique challenges. The Western Mail reported a hip patient in Powys initially told 12 months — then informed the policy had changed, extending the wait to 104 weeks (2 years), as Welsh health boards equalized cross-border waiting times.

2. Canada: Equally Long Waits
Canada’s universal healthcare similarly means long waits. CIHI’s 2025 report shows:
National Data
| Surgery | 2024 Within 6-Month Benchmark | 2019 (Pre-COVID) | 2024 Volume Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hip Replacement | 68% | 75% | +26% |
| Knee Replacement | 61% | 70% | +21% |
Despite performing significantly more surgeries, the proportion receiving timely care remains below pre-pandemic levels.
Provincial Breakdown (2024)
| Province | Hip Replacement (% on time) | Knee Replacement (% on time) |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | 79% | 82% |
| British Columbia | 63% | 55% |
| Nova Scotia | — | 57% |
| New Brunswick | — | 45% |
| Prince Edward Island | — | 28% (lowest nationally) |
| Newfoundland & Labrador | 37% | 29% |

3. The Cost of Waiting: More Than Just Time
Waiting for surgery is not just about lost time. It causes real harm:
1. Physical Cost
Ongoing cartilage deterioration: Damaged joints continue to worsen while waitingMuscle atrophy: Reduced activity due to pain causes muscle loss, making post-surgery recovery harderCompensatory injury: Favoring one leg overloads the healthy joint, risking damagePainkiller dependency: Long-term painkiller use risks stomach, liver, and kidney side effects### 2. Financial Cost
Inability to work: Severe joint pain reduces or eliminates work capacityIncome loss: Waiting 18 months means 18 months of reduced or lost incomeCare costs: Family members may need to take time off to care for you### 3. Psychological Cost
Anxiety and depression: Waiting in uncertainty and pain severely impacts mental healthHelplessness: “There’s nothing I can do but wait”Relationship strain: Chronic illness puts stress on family relationshipsAs Arthritis UK stated in November 2025: “The marginal fall in T&O waiting lists is nowhere near enough — thousands of arthritis patients are waiting in pain.”

4. Why Are Waiting Times So Long?
Understanding the root causes helps you understand the solution:
1. Demand Far Exceeds Supply
Aging population: proportion of people 65+ continues to riseHigh orthopedic disease prevalence: osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease globallyCOVID backlog: massive numbers of elective surgeries postponed during the pandemic### 2. Insufficient Healthcare Resources
Limited operating rooms and bedsShortages of orthopedic surgeons and anesthetistsInsufficient rehabilitation facilities### 3. System Inefficiencies
Lack of unified central scheduling (a CMAJ study found central intake systems nearly halved wait times in some Ontario regions — from 536 to 255 days)Lengthy referral processes---
5. Your Options: Wait or Act?
When facing such lengthy waits, you have three choices:
Option 1: Keep Waiting
Cost: Spend 12-18 months in pain, with deteriorating physical function.
Option 2: Go Private in Your Home Country
Cost: Hip replacement £12,000-£16,000 (~$15,000-$20,000); knee £13,000-£16,000. Benefit: Faster scheduling (typically 2-4 weeks).
Option 3: Get Treated in China Through mymedvia

9. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is China’s medical quality as good as the UK/Canada?
A: China’s top orthopedic hospitals (Beijing Jishuitan Hospital, PUMCH) are world-class. Jishuitan has been accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh since 2008 and performs over 40,000 orthopedic surgeries annually. They use the same surgical techniques and equipment as Western hospitals.
Q: What about the language barrier?
A: This is a key reason mymedvia exists. Our Full Medical Concierge service (from $1,000) includes full-time interpreter/escort support. Partner hospitals (such as PUMCH International Medical Services) also provide multilingual services including English.
Q: How long do I need to stay after surgery before flying home?
A: It depends on the procedure. Typically, after joint replacement, you’ll need to stay locally for 2-3 weeks to ensure safety (7-10 days hospitalization + 1-2 weeks initial recovery post-discharge). Your surgeon will give clearance for flying.
Q: What if complications arise?
A: We track your recovery throughout. If follow-up care is needed, we can help connect you with the original surgical hospital or healthcare providers in your home country.
Q: What do I need to prepare?
A: Your passport, visa (we can assist), recent medical imaging and test reports, a GP referral letter (if available), and a list of your questions. Leave the rest to us.
