If you’ve never traveled abroad for a medical procedure, the idea can feel overwhelming. A foreign country. A different language. A hospital you’ve never seen. Let us walk you through exactly what happens — so the unknown becomes familiar.
Here’s the reality: thousands of international patients undergo endoscopy procedures in China every year. The process is more structured, more supported, and far less complicated than most people imagine. Here’s what your journey would look like with myMedVia.
Step 1: Initial Contact & Scheduling (Day 1–2)
It starts with a conversation. You reach out to myMedVia through the website or a direct call. A patient coordinator — fluent in English — asks about your situation:
What procedure do you need? (Gastroscopy, colonoscopy, or both)Do you have a referral from your doctor back home? (Helpful but not always required)What dates work for your travel?Any specific medical concerns or preferences?---

Within 24–48 hours, the coordinator comes back with 2–3 hospital options, complete with doctor profiles, facility information, and a clear all-inclusive price quote. No obligation. No pressure.
Once you choose a hospital and date, myMedVia locks in the appointment. You book your flight. If you’re on the Full Concierge plan, hotel and airport pickup are arranged for you.
What most patients say at this stage: “I can’t believe it’s this straightforward.”
Step 2: Pre-Procedure Consultation (Day of Arrival or Day Before)
You arrive in China — typically Shanghai, Beijing, or Guangzhou — where the major international hospitals are concentrated. If you’ve opted for Full Concierge, a driver meets you at the airport with a sign with your name on it.
The pre-procedure consultation happens at the hospital’s international patient center. This is not a rushed 10-minute visit. Expect:
A full medical history review — Your coordinator has already translated your relevant records into Chinese. The gastroenterologist reviews them in detail.Physical examination — Basic vitals, abdominal exam.Discussion of the procedure — The doctor explains exactly what will happen, what sedation will be used (typically conscious sedation or light general anesthesia), and answers every question you have.Informed consent — You sign consent forms (available in English).Pre-procedure instructions — Fasting requirements, medication adjustments. For colonoscopy, you’ll receive the bowel preparation solution and clear instructions. The entire consultation typically lasts 30–45 minutes. The gastroenterologists at these international hospitals are accustomed to working with Western patients — many trained in the US, UK, or Australia — and the bedside manner reflects it.
Step 3: Procedure Day — What Actually Happens
Morning of the procedure:
You arrive at the endoscopy unit. A nurse greets you, confirms your identity and the procedure, and escorts you to a private preparation room. You change into a hospital gown. An IV line is placed — this is how you’ll receive sedation.
In the procedure room:
The endoscopy suite looks like what you’d find in any top-tier Western hospital. The equipment — Olympus, Pentax, or Fujifilm — is the same. The room is cool, clean, and monitored.
A nurse stays with you throughoutThe anesthesiologist administers sedation through your IVYou drift into a light, comfortable sleep within secondsThe gastroenterologist performs the procedureFor a gastroscopy: A thin, flexible tube with a camera is passed through your mouth, down the esophagus, into the stomach and duodenum. The doctor examines the lining, takes photos, and if needed, collects small tissue samples (biopsies). The actual procedure takes 5–15 minutes.
For a colonoscopy: The scope is inserted through the rectum to examine the entire colon. The doctor looks for polyps, inflammation, or other abnormalities. Polyps found are typically removed during the same procedure. Duration: 20–40 minutes.
You won’t feel or remember any of it.
Immediately after:
You wake up in a recovery area. A nurse checks your vitals. The sedation wears off quickly — most patients feel alert within 30–60 minutes. You might have a mild sore throat (after gastroscopy) or some bloating (after colonoscopy). Both are normal and temporary.
The hospital typically provides a light meal — tea, congee, or toast — once you’re fully awake, which you’ll appreciate after fasting.
Step 4: Results & Initial Report (Same Day)
This is one of the most satisfying parts of the process. You don’t wait weeks for results.
Within 1–2 hours of waking up, the gastroenterologist sits down with you — in person — to discuss the findings. You’ll see the images from your procedure. The doctor explains what was found:
“Everything looks normal” — and you walk out with peace of mind“We found X and here’s what it means” — with clear next steps“We took biopsies, pathology will take 3–5 days” — and you’ll get results by emailYou receive a printed and digital report in English, including procedure images, findings, and recommendations. This report is formatted to be shareable with your doctor back home.
Step 5: Recovery & Going Home (Day After Procedure)
Most patients are cleared to leave the hospital within 2–3 hours after the procedure. You’ll need someone to accompany you — if you’re traveling alone and on the Full Concierge plan, a coordinator will escort you back to your hotel.
Recovery notes:
No driving or major decisions for 24 hours (sedation aftereffect)Resume normal eating within a few hours (unless told otherwise)Sore throat after gastroscopy — resolves in 1–2 daysMild bloating/cramping after colonoscopy — resolves within hoursMany patients choose to spend 1–2 extra days in China. Shanghai and Beijing are world-class cities — experiencing them turns a medical trip into something more. But if you need to get home quickly, you can fly out as soon as 24 hours after the procedure.
Step 6: Follow-Up & Pathology Results (Day 3–7 Post-Procedure)
If biopsies were taken, pathology results arrive within 3–5 business days. myMedVia coordinates delivery:
Results are emailed to you in EnglishA summary is sent to your referring doctor back home (with your consent)If anything requires follow-up treatment, myMedVia can help coordinate that too — either in China or by connecting you with specialists in your home country### The International Patient Difference
The hospitals myMedVia partners with aren’t just “good enough.” They’re specifically set up for international patients:
English-speaking staff — From registration to recovery, language is not a barrierCultural familiarity — These hospitals serve Western expats and medical travelers daily. They understand your expectations around privacy, communication style, and bedside manner.Translation services — Medical records, consent forms, and reports are provided in English (and other languages upon request)Logistics support — Airport pickup, hotel recommendations near the hospital, local SIM cards — the practical things that make a trip smooth### Why Patients Choose This Path
After the procedure, we often ask patients what surprised them most. The answers are consistent:
“How fast everything was.” “How modern the hospital was — I wasn’t expecting that.” “How much the doctor actually talked to me. At home I get 10 minutes.” “That I got results the same day. I’d been waiting months for an appointment, and then I had answers in hours.”
The endoscopy experience in China’s international hospitals is not “medical tourism” in the stereotype sense — no bare-bones clinics or questionable standards. It’s high-quality healthcare delivered with a level of attention and speed that most Western systems simply can’t match right now.
And when you combine it with myMedVia’s coordination — the scheduling, the translation, the logistics — the entire process becomes not just manageable, but surprisingly smooth.
Your health doesn’t have a waiting room. Neither should your diagnosis.
